PAT 31XX - Oxygen Trace Analyser for the ppm- and Vol-%-Range
with electrochemical sensor

Measuring Oxygen via electrochemical sensors (micro-fuel-cells) has been permanently improved over the last two decades becoming a reliable and suitable analysing method for process applications.

Today not only well-known standard applications but also the analysis of aggressive gases or very complex composition are routinely feasible. To comply with these demands the proper micro-fuel-cell has to be selected with regard to the electrolyte and the material of the electrodes.

For a reliable measurement, it is essential to take into account the actual process parameters. Temperature, pressure, composition, dust content and humidity of the sample gas determine both the design of the analyser and the selection of the suitable sensor.

PAT 3190 and PAT 3195 - Oxygen analysers for the ppm- and Vol-%-Range
with ZrO2 sensor

Trace Oxygen measurement is a frequent necessity for process control and product quality monitoring.
Extending our well known PAT series 3100 employing electrochemical sensors the PAT 3190 and PAT 3195 have been introduced for the in-situ measurement of Oxygen via an Zirconia sensor.
The excellent response of the Zirconia sensor to very low levels of Oxygen has been well known for a long time.
For applications to gases without combustible components, the ZrO2-sensor with platinum electrodes is widely used (PAT 3190).
Since platinum electrodes act as a catalytic oxidant even with trace amounts of combustibles (like H2, CO, CH4), electrodes without such an interference to the Oxygen measurement have been developed recently. The PAT 3195 features this specific kind of an ZrO2-sensor.

PAT 3110

PAT 3110 is designed as a portable, easy to handle analyser. Applications are e.g. the analysis of inert gases, of protective gases - also in the presence of combustibles.
There are three options for the power supply: 230 VAC, 230 VAC and rechargeable battery or battery only.
Measurements in hazardous environments can be carried out with the intrinsically safe model powered by an epoxy casted lead battery.
Optional components: Sensor-bypass and purge valve.

PAT 3120

The analyser PAT 3120 is best suitable for quick and precise measurements of trace Oxygen as well as of vol-% Oxygen. This has a favourable effect on controlling wide concentration ranges typical for heat treatment, welding and inertisation.
In the chemical industry and in thermal engineering processes precise measurements of trace Oxygen as well as of vol-% Oxygen in gases with combustible components is a frequent analysing challenge successfully performed with PAT 3120.
Due to its specific construction this system also meets the demands of high purity gas production.

The PAT 3120 features a twin sensor arrangement, where one sensor is specific for ppm Oxygen and the other for vol-% measurements. Depending from the concentration range the proper sensor comes into action. Measuring vol-% Oxygen, as well as in the case of a short-time exposure to ambient air, the ppm-sensor will be protected against damage caused from high Oxygen contents; there is no longer waiting time for purging, less than 25 ppm Oxygen can be measured immediately afterwards.
For the PAT 3120 two models are deliverable, a desktop unit for mobile applications and a 19-inch rack for stationary purposes.
The PAT 3120 is fully process adaptable. A microprocessor controlls the electronics and the display, calibration and maintanance sequences are menu operated.
Further auxiliary components the like as valves, gas pumps and remote control via RS232 (s. technical data/options) can be factory built-in, fitting the PAT 3120 for the automatic controlling of the Oxygen concentration in the production process just from the control room.
A major advantage for the operator is the option for the internal calibration of the sensor. This measure leads to a lesser number of the gas consuming testing of the once determined calibration line.
For lowest measurement ranges a sensor thermostat is offered as option. Employing this device, temperature effects to the quality of trace measurements of Oxygen can be minimized.
A special feature of this analyser is the option for an external detector. Within the given pressure and temperature limitations it allows the direct measurement in process lines or bypass lines.

PAT 3160

The PAT 3160 is a versatile general purpose instrument. Typical application fields are air separation and gas purification plants as well as furnace atmospheres.
In order to measure Oxygen and Hydrogyen simultaneously, a 2-channel measuring system can be supplied (s. picture).
Four enclosure types are available: desktop and portable unit, 1/2 19-inch-19-inch plug-in (depending from the options built in) and a wall mountable housing.
Auxiliary plug-in components (options): purge valve and sample gas pump, a sensor-bypass valve and the eletronic monitoring of the sample gas flow.
A very special feature of this system is the option for an external detector. In this way measurements at difficult local circumstances can be reasonably carried out.

PAT 3175

Measuring Oxygen in gases in hazardous process environments, e.g. in chemical plants, is a major purpose of the analyser PAT 3175. This feature applies for flammable and not flammable gases.
PAT 3175 is certified as 2-wire-transmitter for hazardous zone 1. When employing an intrinsically safe power supply this transmitter is also intrinsically safe according to ATEX II 2 G with protection degree EEx ia IIC T6.
Two separate wall mounted cabinets (made of cast Aluminium) house the electronics and the gas wetted parts for the measurement. These cabinets carry their own certification EEx e II.

PAT 3185

The PAT 3185 is the system of choice for very sensitive Oxygen measurements. The lowest measuring ranges is 0 ... 1 ppm (via temperature stabilised sensor). Changes of the Oxygen concentration of < 0,1 ppm are detectable combined with a resolution of 0,01 ppm.

Moreover the PAT 3185 comes as a extremely versatile instrument: for mobile use as a desktop or portable version, for local use as a 19“-rack or as wall mountable cabinet respectively.

Similar to the PAT 3120 the PAT 3185 is fully process adaptable. A microprocessor controlls the electronics and the display, calibration and maintanance sequences are menu operated.
Further auxiliary components the like as valves, gas pumps and remote control via RS232 (s. technical data/options) can be factory built-in, fitting the PAT 3185 for the automatic controlling of the Oxygen concentration in the production process just from the control room.

A major advantage for the operator is the option for the internal calibration of the sensor. This measure leads to a lesser number of the gas consuming testing of the once determined calibration line.
For lowest measurement ranges a sensor thermostat is offered as option. Employing this device temperature effects to the quality of trace measurements of Oxygen can be minimized.
Moreover this analyser features also the option for an external detector. Within the given pressure and temperature limitations it allows the direct measurement in process lines or bypass lines.

The components of the series PAT 3190 and PAT 3195 with ZrO2 sensor

The measuring system PAT 3190

The analyser consists of the trace Oxygen sensor with gas flow control modules and the microprocessor driven electronic part which controls the sensor, reads the sensor signals and converts them into the corresponding Oxygen concentration value.
Besides the sensor itself, the gas conducting part of the analyser contains a pressure controller (option), a needle valve and an optical flow indicator for ease of adjustment.
Sample pressure is restricted from 1.01 bar abs. to 2 bar abs. For lower or higher pressures a sample pump or a line pressure reducer can be supplied (option). The measuring unit can be delivered in several housing models to fit to different operation modes: 19”-unit or wall mounted cabinet for stationary purposes as well as a desk top instrument for mobile service.
Regarding ease of operation the PAT 3190 measuring unit may include all the hardware parts for automatic calibration (option).
Due to the system´s sophisticated software, operation and calibration of the ZrO2-sensor is feasible with ambient air as well as with inert gases containing only low ppm-levels of Oxygen.
Furthermore, in case of difficult process conditions, an external sensor can be offered.
A very special feature of this sensor: measurements at sample pressures up to 10 bar are feasible. Beeing proportional to the sample pressure the measuring values have to be corrected correspondingly.
